A furnace replacement is highly important if your current heating system isn’t working up to par anymore, and it needs to be done immediately. At this time of year, when temperatures are dropping, you cannot afford to make any mistakes on your home’s heating. Your furnace may have provided high-quality heating for years, but that doesn’t mean it will last forever. Some homeowners will opt to stay with that old furnace, only to see them encounter higher utility bills and repeated system breakdowns. Don’t become one of those homeowners and instead be proactive about your heating needs. However, this doesn’t mean you should rush and throw money at the nearest heating system available. That may also lead you down a path of frustration. Purchasing the wrong heating system may result in poor system efficiency, greater spending on furnace repairs, and sooner than you realize, more money spent on furnace replacement. Worse, if you live with a growing family, you may not have a heating system that can meet everyone’s needs. You should instead show careful consideration before you think about making a purchase. Even if it’s just a matter of asking yourself a few questions, it can mean all the difference in how comfortably you live in your home this fall and winter.

When a faulty furnace sees a much higher risk of leaking smoke or gas, you will avoid hazards like home heating fires or carbon monoxide exposure. A safer heating system results in you being able to relax so much more in your home.

What to Ask Before Furnace Replacement

Before you waste thousands of dollars on the wrong system, please take the following 5 questions into consideration first:

  1. How Old Is Your Current Furnace? Furnaces have made great strides in recent years in extending lifespan and improving efficiency, with some systems even lasting well beyond 20 years.  If your current furnace is more than 15 years old, it’s time to consider replacing it with a more energy-efficient heating system. Keeping an older furnace in your home will only increase your spending on energy bills. However, you may also find yourself in the exact opposite situation. If your furnace is experiencing issues but is still relatively new, you should consider a furnace repair instead so you’ll save thousands of dollars.
  2. Are There Any Special Deals/Warranties/Rebates? The average cost of a furnace today inches closer to $4,000, so replacement doesn’t exactly come cheap. Replacing your system can take a considerable amount out of your savings if you’re not careful. You should know how to get some money back in your pocket. Fortunately, there are many government agencies and utility companies who offer incentives such as rebates and tax credits to help homeowners who are struggling to pay for a new system on their own.
  3. What Do You Want Other Than “Warm Air”? A new furnace can provide so much more than just warm air, and you need to determine what you will want to gain through replacement. If its energy efficiency you seek, you should research what systems offer a high Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE), which will determine how effectively your system uses fuel.  Also ask your heating contractor about heating zoning systems, which will separate areas of your home into zones and heat to the areas needing it the most.
  4. What Fuel Type Should You Choose? Depending on your geographical location, there are a variety of fuel type options available, such as gas, electric or solar. Each come with their own benefits. Solar furnaces, for example, will not use fuel and instead rely on pure solar power, decreasing your spending on energy bills considerably. Deciding between a gas and electric furnace may prove difficult, but each have their own benefits. Gas furnaces are more efficient, but electric models are safer and longer-lasting.
  5. How Can You Compare Energy-Efficient Models? Higher-rated annual fuel utilization efficiency models can save you considerably on your utility costs. As mentioned previously, you can compare furnaces by their AFUE rating, which may depend on the fueling you choose and your geographical location. For example, gas furnaces models in northern states in the United States need a 95% AFUE or greater. Meanwhile, homeowners in southern states must have an AFUE rating of 90% or higher. Oil furnaces in all regions of the United States must have an efficiency rating of 85% or higher. If you install a system with a high AFUE rating, you will be more likely to save money on future energy bills.
